La Thuile : the Edoardo Camardella project begins
A bivouac and a weather station in memory of the young alpinist who died in 2019.
The first bivouac of La Thuile will be named to Edoardo Camardella, a young alpinist and ski instructor, who died under an avalanche with his friend Luca Martini on November 19, 2019. The structure will be located on the Rutor Glacier, at 3360 metres above sea level.
While waiting to be positioned on the glacier, the bivouac has been placed in the square in front of the Funivie Piccolo San Bernardo. In this way, everyone can visit it. In fact, the structure was designed to be moved by helicopter.
The Rutor Glacier was one of the Edoardo’s most loved locations. The alpine guides have choosen this place as a strategic point for mountaineers; in fact, the Tour du Rutor – an important international ski mountaineering competition - passes there.
The new bivouac has a wide glass wall that will face Mont Blanc. There will also be a weather station close to the bivouac, on which a 360° webcam will be positioned. This weather station will be the highest in the Western Alps, and one of the highest in Europe. A panel inside the bivouac will describe the project and all of the people and companies that contributed to realize it.

The construction of the new bivouac – light, strong and energy independent – has been possible thanks to several technical partners: Faces Engineering, for the structure and the shell, Ariatta for the technological systems, Politecnico di Milano (Wind Engineering - Dipartimento di Meccanica) for calculations of wind and weather conditions resistance; società Gualini - Gruppo COSTIM for the realisation of the whole bivouac, Barailler Edilizia for the placement and Concreta for the interior design. Inside the bivouac a portrait of Edoardo will be placed.
Materials and systems provided by supporting companies: the aluminium shell systems by Prefa, the metal profiles by Schüco, the ceramics by Sant’Agostino, the timber claddings by Legnoforniture, the batteries by Fiamm, the glass by Guardian Glass, the door by Olcese Ricci, the floor heating by Santoni, the photovoltaic panels by Solbian, the electric panels by Siemens and the electric shock protection system by Dehn. The cross was made by Legnotech, and the webcam will be positioned thanks to the contribution of SkyWay Mont Blanc.
The project team consisted of: Matteo Colombo, Alessandro Colombo, Sergio D'antonio, Lorenzo Ferrario, Irene Milan and Riccardo Panichi.
Geologist Mario Ravello and engineer Gianluigi Franzini of Funivie Piccolo San Bernardo worked with them as consultants.
The bivouac has been built in agreement with the Aosta Valley Region, the municipalities of La Thuile and Valgrisenche, the Aosta Valley ski instructors Association and the Union of Aosta Valley high mountain guides.
