Maison Berton: Preserving Aosta Valley Traditions and Culture in the Heart of La Thuile
If delving into La Thuile's local traditions, culture and craftsmanship is what you're looking to do, then Maison Berton is a must-see. The Berton family, of Tchuilien origin, chose La Thuile as their holiday destination in the early 1900s.
They purchased a spectacular villa and gradually transformed it into a living testament to the traditions and craftsmanship of the Aosta Valley, which they passionately admired. One of the two Berton brothers, a historian by profession, began collecting books, ceramics, sculptures, prints and inlaid furniture, which, though safely preserved within his home, he loved to share , aiming to make them “common property” for all those who, whether for a week or a lifetime, chose to live in La Thuile.
In the spirit of maintaining a deep connection to the region, the two brothers donated Maison Berton to the Municipality of La Thuile, requesting that it become a museum for all intents and purposes.
Today, Maison Berton is the dream-come-true of a visionary historian who wanted everyone to be able to read in his library, admire local craftsmanship, and explore furniture items and objects that testify to a culture meticulously preserved not only by the Berton family but by the entire La Thuile community.
The interiors have retained the charm of a refined Aosta Valley residence, with the rooms left exactly as the owners designed them, combining antique objects with modern furniture.
